The Benang Program was created to meet the needs of the local Aboriginal community to help address the increasing statistics of Aboriginal youth suicide.

The aim of the program is to provide education on suicide prevention to schools and community groups and to provide information on services available to assist individuals and families dealing with mental health issues.

It is through education and providing information about suicide prevention, Benang hopes to make a difference in the Aboriginal community. We encourage individuals to talk about social and emotional issues in the hope of reducing suicide and negative mental health issues impacting upon and within our community.

Australia’s new digital mental health gateway now live!

The Turnbull Government launched the new digital mental health gateway – Head to Health.

Head to Health provides a place where people can access support and information before they reach crisis

For Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, the strength of personal identity is often connected to culture, country and family.

Like all of us, however, you can have problems with everyday things like money, jobs and housing that can impact your social and emotional wellbeing. On top of that, you might have to deal with racism, discrimination, bullying, gender-phobia, and social inequality.

Maybe something like this is happening to you, or to someone you know. Troubles like these can affect how you are feeling, and that can also affect your family and your community or mob.

If you are not feeling as good as you know you should be, or you and your family/ friends aren’t coping with the sickness or death of someone close, then you might need to yarn with someone.

You can yarn to someone at the Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander medical or health service, or on the phone if you like, with the 24-hour helpline. You can also use online chat services. There are some suggested and useful resources at the  Head to Health webpage which you can access by clicking on the orange button below.
